I think of backlinks as similar to high school cliques. If you hung out with the cool kids, it was assumed you were cool by association. If you were like me and hung out with the band geeks and the sci-fi fantasy club, you probably had a lot of fun, even if you weren’t considered “cool.”

The assumption in high school was that like hangs out with like, and that assumption extends to the internet. If you’re on social media, you’ll browse someone’s friends and group membership to get an idea of what they’re like.

It can be a bit harder to determine whom someone is hanging out with by looking at their website. That’s where backlinks come into play.

A backlink is when another website includes a link to your website in the content of their website. They’re essentially using you as a reference, or at the very least, saying, “Hey, this person is cool, you should check them out.”

Google also assumes like hangs out with like. If high-quality websites that are ranking for relevant searches are linking back to yours, Google will assume your website is also high-quality. If low-quality websites with thin content and spammy SEO tactics are linking back to yours, that could actually hurt your SEO because Google assumes like hangs out with like.

So how can you get in with the cool kids and win Google’s approval?
